Sandburg Literacy Coalition Seeking Volunteer Tutors

WARREN COUNTY, Ill.--The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteers for tutoring in Warren County. Basic volunteer training sessions will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 10, 17 and 24 in Room 206 of the Haldeman-Thiessen Science Center on the campus of Monmouth College.Basic training is 16 hours. Twelve hours are completed in class, and the remaining four hours are individual and depend on the interest of the volunteer. Training, tutoring books and materials are free. Food will be provided at all training sessions. It also is possible to complete 12 hours of training online. This training is transferable to most other literacy programs. Completion of the training and volunteer tutoring are excellent credentials to add to job and school applications.

Volunteers may choose to focus on math, learning disabilities, English language learners or specific reading areas, such as phonics or fluency. Once trained, volunteers typically meet for about an hour once a week at a public site and can tutor students one-on-one, in small groups or in classrooms and also assist with specific projects and events.

Registration is required. To register or for more information, contact Karen Avalos, literacy project coordinator, at 309.344.1631 or kavalos@sandburg.edu.
