Monmouth Fire hope to keep the wreath red during holiday season | Families

Monmouth, Ill.--There is a large wreath in front of the north Monmouth Fire Station. It is not there for decoration, but a symbol that Monmouth Fire uses to spread fire safety awareness this holiday season.
“Keeping the Wreath Red” campaign has been up since the beginning of December and will continue to stay up until the end of month.
The wreath is adorned in dozens of red lights. Any structure fires that occur locally in December will result in one light being shut off.
“We’re hoping there will be a lot of red at the end of December,” said Monmouth firefighter Dan Chard.
The tradition has been around for several years. The Monmouth Fire Department hopes it will raise fire safety awareness this holiday season, a season often plagued with house fires.
